Referrals and rebates

Referrals and rebates

Referrals

You do not need a referral to access our DBT program, however, if you would like to claim Medicare rebates you will need to see your medical specialist for a referral letter.

With a valid referral from your GP or psychiatrist, you may be entitled to Medicare rebates for part of the session fee for individual and group sessions.

We accept referrals under the Medicare Better Access Initiative (i.e. GP Mental Health Care Plan referral or psychiatrist referral).

Medicare rebates

The number of rebates claimable in a CALENDAR YEAR (1 January - 31 December) are as follows.

Individual sessions: 10 rebate claims

Group sessions: 10 rebate claims

Each new calendar year sees these counts reset (e.g. you can claim 10 rebates again in the next calendar year).

Any unused sessions on a referral can carry over to a new calendar year, once your claimable rebates reset.

Please note:

The total number of rebates claimable per calendar year are combined with other allied health service. Please keep that in mind if you have or will be claiming rebates with other therapies (e.g. psychology, social work, occupational therapy, etc.). If you are unsure of your claim status, we recommend that you contact Medicare who can check your claims history for the year. Medicare phone lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist with enquiries, phone 132 011.

Medicare rebate for individual sessions:

$141.85 with Clinical Psychologist

$96.65 with Clinical Psychology Registrar

Rebates claims can only be submitted after full session payment is processed

Medicare rebate for group sessions:

$24.65 - $36.00 per weekly group session

Skills group rebate claims are processed on a weekly basis, after the weekly skills group session.

Medicare rebate claims can be lodged electronically on your behalf, and Medicare will process the rebate to the bank account that you have registered with Medicare.

Medicare rebates can only be claimed for attended individual appointments and skills group sessions.

More information about the Australian Government Better Access Initiative and referral process can be found on the Services Australia Fact Sheets linked below.

Fact sheet: Better Access to Psychiatrists, Psychologists and General Practitioners through the MBS (Better Access) initiative

Private health rebates

We do not process claims to private health funds, nor do we have knowledge of private health rebate amounts. We encourage all clients to check with their health fund before commencing DBT as to whether you have appropriate cover. We can provide you with a paid receipt so that you can submit a claim if you have appropriate private health cover.

Attendance policy

Attendance policy

DBT assessment and individual sessions

Our attendance policy was developed with the awareness that when appointments are booked, both the clinician and the client will make that time available for therapy and your clinician will spend time and resources preparing for your session.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your assessment or individual DBT appointment, please provide us with 48 hours’ notice or a fee will be charged.

Applicable fees:

If between 24-48 hours' notice is provided, you will be charged a $50 fee.

If less than 24 hours' notice or you do not attend your appointment, you will be charged 100% of the session fee.

You cannot claim rebates for late cancellation and missed session fees.

Late arrival: if you arrive late for an appointment, your session will still finish at the scheduled time and the full session fee will apply.

Appointment reminders: we will endeavour to send appointment reminders as a courtesy; however, they are not guaranteed due to potential technical issues. It remains the responsibility of the client to take steps to remember their appointments. Your appointment will not be cancelled if you do not reply to the reminder message, you are still required to contact us if you need to cancel or reschedule.

A late cancelled appointment or non-attendance is a loss to three people:

  1. the client who is delaying their therapy process

  2. another client who has been on the waiting list

  3. the clinician who spent time preparing for the session

We understand that, at times, events may be beyond your control and there can be genuine reasons for late cancellation. In many cases, there is the option to change your appointment to a telehealth (video) session. Contact our admin team before the time of your appointment via phone, email or SMS and they can assist you.

Other elements of the DBT program

Further to our attendance policy and expectations for individual sessions, there are also expectations and commitment requirements for the other elements of our DBT program. Such as attending all scheduled skills group sessions and staying for the entire group session, and advising admin before commencement of the group session if you will be running late.

Refunds will not be issued for any missed group sessions or unused phone coaching fees.
