About Melissa:

As a psychologist I love DBT because it gives me and my clients a really clear, non-judgemental framework for understanding difficulties with emotion regulation, including where they come from and what to do about them. It also helps us to prioritise what to focus on and when in therapy, and some really practical strategies that are useful for so many problems in living.

My journey with DBT began with buying the first edition of Dr Marsha Linehan’s DBT skills training manual as a new graduate in 2003. I began using the skills with many of my clients, who I was seeing for a range of problems, and began to see my clients getting improvements. I also began applying the principles to my own life, and I have used it with clients and with myself ever since. It has grown to be my passion, and DBT continues to be the primary framework that I use with most of my clients, 18 years later!

I have developed experience in delivering DBT skills training groups, providing individual therapy, providing phone coaching, and participating in consultation teams since the mid-00s. I was the first clinician in Australia to be intensively trained in the DBT Prolonged Exposure (DBT PE) protocol, when I completed my training at Behavioral Tech/The Linehan Institute in Seattle, Washington, in 2017.

I have been involved in delivering DBT programs to adolescents and adults, in a private hospital, NGOs, and in private practice. I was involved as a PhD student in a large, multi-site study into DBT within our frontline mental health teams. I have been involved in the setup of DBT programs in NGOs, including the first comprehensive DBT program delivered within an NGO in collaboration with a public mental health service. I am also a DBT supervisor and trainer, and have delivered intensive DBT training to over 200 individuals and teams in Queensland and NSW.

I love working within The Glow Centre DBT program because we are a team of committed, compassionate DBT clinicians, who support each other to stay adherent to the DBT model and give the best possible DBT to our clients. We are also committed to excellence and strive for excellence in all of the DBT that we do, and we are always brainstorming ways to improve how we deliver DBT.

About Kaycee:

As a therapist I love DBT because – it works for me (I actively use a number of the skills I teach) and I have seen truly amazing outcomes for people have been through the program, which is so inspiring to be a part of. The skills are practical and are transferable in so many populations; if it were up to me, I would be imparting these skills to anyone and everyone who would listen! A large part of my passion for DBT is also because it is a proven/evidenced way for people who have borderline personality disorder to recover (yes it is definitely possible) and have a life worth living, find a balance of acceptance and change and channel their wise mind.

My journey with DBT began in my early social work life when I was working in public mental health, supporting people primarily with borderline personality disorder; unfortunately I wasn’t able to do training at that stage, however it piqued my interest to ensure it was something I pursues. A few years later I had the opportunity to be trained by Melissa Kent and to start a comprehensive DBT program in a community setting - I jumped at the chance. Since then, I have been facilitating skills groups and providing individual therapy in both standard comprehensive programs and DBT-informed settings, as well actively participating in consult groups and coordinating programs. I am hoping to expand my DBT journey further one day in to DBT-Prolonged Exposure and Radically Open-DBT.

I love working with The Glow Centre DBT program because we are as close to adhering to the way the program would be run in Seattle, but also being able to work flexibly enough with the community and private practice setting as we can – and it works! The biggest drawcard though, was being able to work with and continue to learn from my DBT guru in Melissa Kent, this has been awe-inspiring and makes me want to continue to thrive to do even better than I am.

About Katie:

As a psychologist I love DBT because of its practical and easy to understand approach to improving and resolving many of life’s challenges.

My journey with DBT began when I first learnt about it at university and then saw an opportunity to create a DBT program to support people staying at a homeless shelter I was managing. We engaged Melissa to provide level 3 comprehensive training to myself and the team and I was sold! Since coming into private practice, I have used DBT informed therapy with individual clients regularly and am a part of the DBT consult team. I have seen firsthand how effective DBT can be for people with borderline personality disorder, but also for people experiencing a broad range of challenges including anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.

I love working within The Glow Centre DBT program because I feel privileged to go on a journey with each new client I meet where I’m entrusted with their life story and given the opportunity to support them to develop new skills to better navigate life’s challenges.
